It’s becoming common knowledge that many of the most popular beauty products, soaps and cosmetics that are available for purchase at your local grocery store and drug store are chalk full of chemicals and cancer-causing carcinogens.

Today we are looking at something you probably use in your shower everyday – shampoo!  You might be surprised to learn that the most popular brands of shampoo (think Garnier, Herbal Essences, Dove…) contain many hazardous chemicals, like fragrances, which are often times carcinogenic (aka cancer-causing), DMDM hydantoin (allergy aggravator), and 1,4-dioxane, another cancer-causing chemical. If you would like to check out what chemicals are in your favourite shampoo, you can use the amazing website, EWG Skin Deep. Just type in the brand in the search bar and prepare to ditch that sudsy stuff!

Luckily there is an easy, healthy and environmentally friendly way for you to wash your hair, that is also part of a breast healthy lifestyle. This method uses a diluted mixture of baking soda and water, followed by a diluted mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to not only clean your hair but leave it silky smooth!

The “No Poo” Method

Measure 2 tbsp baking soda and add it to 500 mL of water in a bottle or glass jar. Stir to dissolve. Wet your hair and pour the mixture over your head and scrub into hair. Rinse. Measure 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar and add it to 500 mL of water in a bottle or glass jar. Pour over head, and rinse almost immediately.

You may find it helpful to pre-mix the solutions and keep them in separate water bottles in your shower. That way, you can get about 2-3 shampoos out of them (more if you have short hair) and you won’t have to go to the trouble of mixing each time you shower.

It’s important to always follow the baking soda wash with the apple cider vinegar, as the vinegar will balance the pH of the alkaline baking soda. The vinegar is also what keeps the hair shiny and smooth, while the baking soda simply washes away oils and dirt!

Not only is this method safer for your body and breast healthy to boot, but it’s also super cheap and eco friendly too.

We challenge you to try the “No Poo” method just for 10 days! Tell us what you think.
